Asking for a credit line increase |
|
With all the arguing going on in our Congress
concerning raising our Country's debt ceiling, it reminds me of all the questions I have received from clients over the years on how to raise their own personal "debt ceiling." It has to be one of the most asked questions I get. Let me start by saying that debt, while necessary for most people, is not always a good thing. But if you must ask for a credit line increase here are a few pointers on how to get what you want. First before you start, you must know your credit score and what is on your credit report. There is no sense in asking for an increase if you have recent negative marks or if you are behind on something now. Try to pay off any small balances you have to "clean up" your report. The internet has taken over America but I think this is one instance where we should pick up the phone and talk to a live person. Call me superstitious but I believe you just get more if you talk to a live representative. Another key point is to have a good reason for requesting the increase. Home repair, auto repair, and debt consolidation are very good reasons. Vacations, shopping sprees, and personal splurges won't get you very far. And lastly, only ask for what you need and be reasonable. If you have only a $500.00 line of credit now, asking for several more thousands of dollars is pointless. Take my word for it, you won't be approved. I hope these points help you the next time you need to ask for an increase in your personal "debt ceiling." Have a great day! Lee |
